ATC Training

Introduction:

Air Traffic Control is a service of the Civil Aviation Authority to accomplish a safe and expeditious flow of air traffic in the South African airspace system.

At VATSAF we strive to simulate the real world ATC procedures and phraseology as far as possible. To this end we use ATNS procedures as far as realistically possible, with the kind assistance of ATNS South Africa.

ATC Career Path at VATSAF:

After your initial training and familiarisation on the Euroscope radar client, you will start providing ATC services as a Delivery Clearance and Ground controller.

All theoretical training will be done on the Vatsaf Academy Wbsite, and all practical training will be done online on Teamspeak. You will need to download and install the Euroscope radar client and the relevant sector files for South Africa. You can find all downloads on this website, under "Downloads -> ATC"

Once you are familiar with the local procedures and the use of the radar scope, you will be allowed to go solo and control at your favourite airport. All promotions will be considered after a checkride was performed with one of our instructors.

Prerequisites for ATC Training:

The following requirements must be met before starting your ATC carreer at VATSAF:

 - You must have been a member of VATSAF for a minimum period of 1 Month

 - You must have done at least 10 hours of online flying on the VATSIM Network

 - You must be 15 years of age or older

 - You must have attended and completed a Radio Telephony course. Details and required reading material can be found below.

Radio Telephony Training:

VATSAF Offers a comprehensive Radio Telephony training course, which comes very close to the ATNS training given to PPL pilots in South Africa. All training is done on the VATSAF Teamspeak server.

You will be required to download the RT training material from the Download section of the website.
